Children have to grow up way too fast in India. Lack of resources and access to basic healthcare mean injury and illness take a massive toll on families. Families end up in debt to loan sharks, trying to cover education, then children have to leave school to help pay the debt.

Very often because they have been orphaned, abandoned or need to help care for a sick parent, our girls and boys never get the chance to get a basic education.

Education is the key to getting out of the poverty trap. The Nandri Sponsor a Child programme enables disadvantaged families to provide education for their children. Your contribution to the programme will be used in three key areas:

Emergency grants to keep children in education in emergency situations
Education grants that help the most disadvantaged children in villages across Tamil Nadu

Since 1996, thanks to our donors, we have supported over 9,000 children.

Over 800 children have gone on to graduate with third level qualifications.

GIRLS IN EDUCATION

One of the key missions for Nandri’s sponsor a child programme is to support more girls and women in education.

Investing in the education of girls has a profound impact on communities, countries, and the entire planet. Girls who acquire an education are less likely to marry early and lead healthier, more productive lives. They have higher salaries, are more involved in the issues that impact them, and are able to better their own and their family' destinies.

Education for girls boosts economies and decreases inequity. It leads to more secure, resilient societies that allow all people, especially boys and men, to reach their full potential.

EMERGENCY EDUCATION GRANTS

These grants allow Nandri to step in when a child’s education is at risk due to an unforeseen emergency. This could be one or both parents dying, suffering from a serious injury or illness or being abandoned.

Children will fall out of education in an emergency, unless someone steps in. In these situations an education can be more than just learning. They can provide emotional support, providing stability and structure to children to help them cope with the trauma they face.

GRANTS FOR THE MOST DISADVANTAGED

This grant supports child in education who are the most in need, so that they may have a career and break the bonds of discrimination. Education requires a week's wages each month for a family to keep a child in school, and can be too much for the worst off. By supporting the most disadvantaged with this grant we are able to keep these children in education.

The most disadvantaged families have the highest risk of ending up in debt to loan sharks. They take out loans to try to cover education, then their children end up leaving school to help pay the debt. This cycle keeps them from breaking the bonds of poverty.

HOW IT WORKS

Nandri area managers in India work to identify children that fit our criteria for the programme. They visit the families to ensure they are in need of support and administer the overall selection process.

Their selections are then reviewed by Nandri. After approval we will provide financial support to families for education costs. Our area managers will check in on the children and families in the programme ensuring the children are staying in education and to encourage them on to third level.
