A cow called Ella brings hope.

Mrs Maari, a widow, struggled through the years to raise her two children. Her adult daughter tragically died, leaving her to care for her two young grandchildren. Mrs Maari already hardly managing to feed herself and her elderly mother on her meager day wages she earns working in the fields. She knew she could not survive with two more mouths to feed, never mind being able to pay for their education. The future of the family looked very bleak.

Her life changed when she joined a Nandri Mothers group and received a loan to buy a cow. A generous lady called Ella, donated the money to Nandri to buy a cow for Mrs Maari and in honour of this donation, Mrs Maari named the cow ‘Ella’. Each day she takes the cow with her when she works in the fields. She sells the milk to earn extra money to feed her family who also benefit from the dairy produce made from Ella’s milk.

Ella is now in calf and soon she will have two cows and more income to help provide for her family. Mrs Maari aims to have 3 or 4 cows some of which she can then sell to enable her to have sufficient money to keep her grandchildren in education and for them to continue to college. Nandri, a cow called Ella and a micro loan has helped this mother rise from poverty to relative prosperity that she could not have dreamed of and given her grandchildren the opportunity of staying in education and hope of a bright future.
